Murlyn Music was founded in 1998 by Anders Bagge and Christian Wåhlberg. Wåhlberg told HitQuarters that they had been inspired by Denniz PoP's Cheiron, saying: "I wanted to do a similar thing but different."[2] At that point Sweden had yet to be recognised internationally as being at the forefront of pop production and so Wåhlberg and Bagge had to first establish themselves with unknown international acts before they were able to attract the attentions of major pop stars. Murlyn's big breakthrough came with the US boy band 98 Degrees.
In 2001 Murlyn signed a marketing deal with Universal Music Group for distributing the catalogue of songs materials produced by Murlyn Music worldwide. Colin Barlow, Jimmy Iovine and Lucian Grainge proposed building a company around Murlyn's songwriting where they would develop acts together.[2] Unfortunately this relationship with Interscope and Universal came at a time when the era's pop trend was fading and singer-songwriter acts were starting to dominate. Murlyn wanted to focus more on singer-songwriters, but the level of time and development required was something that the major label was reluctant to support. Wåhlberg described the singer-songwriter career plan: "You write and produce your first album and find your fan base, and then you hit the big numbers on the second one. But from the point of view of the record label, they want a return faster than a second album."[2]
In 2007 Bagge and Wåhlberg sold the publishing catalogue to Crosstown Songs in America.
